This irregular block of limestone, pictured here, holds a significant place in Irish history as the reputed site where the Treaty of Limerick was signed, bringing an end to the Williamite War in Ireland between the Jacobites and the supporters of William of Orange. The Treaty of Limerick, signed on October 3, 1691, marked the conclusion of the Siege of Limerick, which had lasted for over a month. The treaty, in fact, consisted of two separate agreements: the Treaty of Limerick itself and the subsequent Treaty of Limerick (Second Part). These treaties brought an end to the protracted conflict, which had begun in 1689, and paved the way for a period of relative peace and stability in Ireland. Legend has it that the treaties were signed on this very stone, which once served as a mounting block for horses.
