EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases an enchanting assembly of thrushes, blackbirds, and the elusive ring ouzel. The illustration features six different species of thrushes: the mistle thrush (Turdus viscivorus) with its distinctive crest, the fieldfare (Turdus pilaris) in its rust-colored plumage, the redwing (Turdus iliacus) with its orange-red flanks, the song thrush (Turdus philomelos) in its spotted breast, and two blackbirds (Turdus merula) with their glossy black feathers. The ring ouzel (Turdus torquatus), with its distinctive blue-gray back and black belly, adds a splash of color and intrigue to the gathering. Thrushes and blackbirds are old world birds, known for their melodic songs and omnivorous diet. This historical illustration not only serves as a testament to the natural beauty of these birds but also offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the intricate detail and artistry of handcolored copperplate engravings.
