Sergeant Alvin Cullum York (1887-1964), American soldier, one of the most decorated of the First World War. Seen here on the hill in the Argonne Forest, near Cornay, France, where he took part in a raid on 8 October 1918 when 132 German prisoners were captured. (The photograph was taken after the war had ended.)
