EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph captures the exquisite beauty of the Cordyline hybrid Don Pedro Pastor, a cross between Cordyline stricta and Cordyline fruticosa, also known as Dracaena Don Pedro Pastor y Landero. Named in honor of the Madrid gardener, Don Pedro Landero, this hybrid was a popular ornamental plant during the late 19th century. The Cordyline genus, commonly known as cabbage palms or cordylines, is native to the Pacific Islands and New Zealand. The Cordyline stricta, with its tall, slender, and rigid leaves, and the Cordyline fruticosa, with its more compact and rosette-like growth habit, make for an intriguing cross. The resulting hybrid, Don Pedro Pastor, boasts vibrant, red-tinged leaves that cascade down in a lush, full display. This beautiful representation of Don Pedro Pastor was created by the renowned Belgian botanical artist, Pieter de Pannemaeker, for Jean Linden's Horticole Illustrations, published in Brussels in 1885. Chromolithography, a color printing technique popular during this time, was used to bring the intricate details and rich colors of the plant to life. The result is a captivating and accurate portrayal of this unique and beautiful hybrid. Don Pedro Pastor remains a popular ornamental plant today, admired for its striking appearance and ability to thrive in various climates. This chromolithograph serves as a testament to the artistry and scientific curiosity of the past, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the plant world.
