EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a hose laying lorry (K30) from New Malden fire station within the Greater London Council-London Fire Brigade (GLC-LFB) fleet, taken in the late 1960s. The GLC-LFB was formed on 1 April 1965, and as part of documenting the various types of fire engines that were either part of the enlarged London Fire Brigade or absorbed into it, a series of photos was commissioned. The hose laying lorry in this image is an LCC-LFB style vehicle, which was specifically designed for the London Fire Brigade. Its primary role was to carry and lay long lengths of fire hose during emergencies. The vehicle, with its distinctive design and equipment, was an essential component of the fire service's arsenal in the 1960s. This Dennis-built hose laying lorry, stationed at New Malden fire station, is a testament to the advanced firefighting technology of the time. The vehicle's spacious compartment housed an extensive hose reel, allowing firefighters to quickly and efficiently lay hoses to reach distant fires. The hose laying lorry was an indispensable appliance in the GLC-LFB fleet, ensuring that firefighters were well-equipped to tackle emergencies and keep London safe. The photograph, taken in the 1960s, offers a glimpse into the rich history of the London Fire Brigade and the evolution of its appliance fleet. This image, along with others from the same series, serves as a valuable historical record and a reminder of the vital role that fire services play in our communities.
