EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two exquisite bird species native to the Hawaiian Islands: the Hawaiian honeycreeper, Vestiaria coccinea, and the scarlet-chested sunbird, Nectarinia senegalensis. The image is taken from Jean Gabriel Pretre's contributions to the "Dictionnaire de Naturaliste: Omnithologie," published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Hawaiian honeycreeper, also known as the 'iiwi,' is a vulnerable species of honeycreeper with bright red feathers on its chest and wings, contrasting with its green back and black mask. The bird's beak is curved and long, designed for extracting nectar from flowers. The Hawaiian honeycreeper is an essential component of the native ecosystem, playing a crucial role in pollination. The scarlet-chested sunbird, or Nectarinia senegalensis, is a small, vibrant bird with a scarlet chest and black wings. This sunbird is native to Africa and was likely included in Pretre's work due to its striking resemblance to the Hawaiian honeycreeper. Sunbirds are known for their long, curved beaks, which they use to extract nectar from flowers. The intricate details of these birds are beautifully captured in this engraving, which was directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and engraved by Giraud. The handcoloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art. This engraving is a testament to the meticulous work of Pretre and the team behind the "Dictionnaire de Naturaliste," showcasing the natural beauty and diversity of the world's birds.
