EDITORS COMMENTS
This funerary relief, dated back to the IV century B.C., is a stunning example of ancient Greek art discovered near Larisis station in Athens and now proudly displayed at the National Archaeological Museum. The relief is carved from Penteli marble and depicts a man in the prime of his life, mounted on a horse, his age and strength embodied in every line of his muscular form. The man wears a panther skin, a symbol of power and nobility, and holds a whip in his right hand and the reins in his left, maintaining a firm control over the majestic horse. The scene is a testament to the deep connection between man and animal in ancient Greek culture, where horses were not only used for transportation but also held great spiritual significance. The intricate details of the relief, from the textured mane of the horse to the creases of the man's clothing, showcase the masterful craftsmanship of the ancient Greek sculptors. This fourth century B.C. work of art is a reminder of the rich history and artistic achievements of ancient Greece, a legacy that continues to inspire and captivate us today.
