EDITORS COMMENTS
This print is the first sheet in a series of posters entitled "Extinct Animals" by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, created around 1862. The illustrations showcase a diverse array of marine reptiles that inhabited the Earth during the Jurassic period, approximately 200 to 145 million years ago. The Jurassic period is renowned for its rich marine life, which included various groups such as ammonites, ammonoids, and bivalves. Among these extinct creatures are the cephalopods, like the iconic ammonite with its intricately patterned shell, and the ichthyosaur, an advanced marine reptile with a streamlined body and a dorsal fin. Other fascinating marine reptiles depicted in this series include the crocodylomorphs, such as the Devil's Toenail, and the echinoderms, like the crinoid and the brachiopod. The crinoid, a filter feeder, is shown with its delicate arms extended, while the gryphaea, a bivalve mollusc, is shown with its distinctive fan-shaped shell. The anatomy of these extinct animals is depicted in exquisite detail, with particular attention paid to their mouths, eyes, and other distinguishing features. The monochrome illustrations, reminiscent of the nineteenth century, offer a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the daytime habitats of these remarkable creatures. This collection, on display at the Crystal Palace in London during the late 1800s, was a testament to the scientific curiosity and artistic skill of Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins. The prints continue to inspire awe and fascination, offering a window into the Mesozoic Era and the wonders of the natural world that once existed.
