EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunningly detailed illustration showcases the broad-winged hawk, Buteo platypterus, in all its majesty. Plate 91 from John James Audubon's iconic work, "Birds of America," was created between 1827 and 1830 and is part of the original double elephant folio edition. The illustration was engraved, printed, and hand-coloured by R. Havell (& Son) of London. The broad-winged hawk is depicted perched on a branch, its wings folded neatly behind it. The hawk's wings, with their distinctive broad band of dark feathers, are spread out to the side, revealing the intricacies of the feather patterns. The hawk's head is turned towards its prey, a nut clutched tightly in its talons. The hawk's eyes are sharp and focused, reflecting its predatory nature. The broad-winged hawk is a bird of prey from the family Accipitridae, order Accipitriformes, and class Sauropsida. It is a medium-sized hawk with a wingspan of 36 to 42 inches and a body length of 14 to 17 inches. The hawk's plumage is streaked with brown and rufous, providing excellent camouflage in its woodland habitat. Audubon's meticulous attention to detail is evident in this illustration, from the textured bark of the branch to the individual feathers on the hawk's wings. The hand-colouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, bringing the broad-winged hawk to life. This illustration is not only a beautiful work of art but also an important scientific record of this magnificent bird.
