This print depicts a section of the Monumental Procession Street in ancient Babylon, a remarkable archaeological discovery now displayed at the Archaeological Museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Dating back to the 6th century BC during the Neo-Babylonian period, this intricately decorated street was once a grand processional way for royal ceremonies and parades. The relief, expertly reconstructed from fragments, showcases an array of Akkadian deities and mythological creatures, including lions, a symbol of power and strength in Babylonian culture. The lions are depicted in bas-relief, a technique that involves carving figures into a flat surface, giving the appearance of three-dimensionality.
