Created around 1831, this artwork combines watercolor and graphite on off white wove paper, measuring approximately 10 9/16 x 14 3/4 inches (26.8 x 37.5 cm). The artist behind this remarkable piece is David Cox, a British painter born in Birmingham in 1783. The main focus of the recto side is the Greenwich Hospital study building itself, depicted with meticulous attention to detail. The architectural elements are beautifully captured, including paired columns and touches of blue watercolor that represent the sky in the upper right corner. A brown wash adds depth to the pediment at its center while swift strokes of black and red describe figures dressed in naval uniforms.
