Revolt of the citizens of London against Matilda, 1141
Revolt of the citizens of London against Matilda, 1141. Stephen (1096-1154), the last Norman King of England, reigned from 1135 to 1154. He supported the claim to the throne of Matilda (1102-1167), the daughter of Henry I, before usurping her when Henry died in 1135 and claiming the throne for himself. England descended into a period of civil war. Stephen was captured after he was defeated by Matildas army at the Battle of Lincoln in 1141 but was freed in an exchange for the captive Robert, Earl of Gloucester, Matildas most able lieutenant. Matildas time on the throne was brief, as a rebellion forced her to flee London. Stephen regained the throne and Matilda was besieged in Oxford, but escaped to Wallingford. The conflict dragged on until 1148 when Matilda returned to France after the Earl of Gloucester died. Eventually, in 1154, her son was crowned king as Henry II after Stephen died

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in English history - the Revolt of the citizens of London against Matilda in 1141. The image depicts a chaotic scene on a medieval street, filled with angry protesters demanding change. Men from all walks of life come together, united by their discontent and frustration. The backdrop to this uprising is the power struggle between King Stephen and Matilda for the throne of England. Stephen initially supported Matilda's claim but later seized power for himself after Henry I's death in 1135. This led to years of civil war that tore the country apart. In 1141, Matilda's army defeated Stephen at the Battle of Lincoln, capturing him as her prisoner. However, her time on the throne was short-lived as rebellion forced her to flee London. Stephen regained his position as king while Matilda sought refuge in Oxford before eventually returning to France. The engraving beautifully portrays the intensity and passion behind this revolt, highlighting both anger and determination among its subjects. It serves as a reminder of how political unrest can ignite powerful movements that shape nations' destinies. As we gaze upon this historical artifact captured by an unknown creator, we are transported back to a turbulent era where ordinary citizens dared to challenge authority and fight for what they believed was right.
