EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait captures Marie-Thérèse d'Autriche (1638-1683), the Austrian Infanta and future Queen of France, in the prime of her youth around 1670. Painted by the Ecole Francaise, this oil on canvas masterpiece showcases the elegant fashion of the 17th century. Marie-Therèse wears a blue dress adorned with intricate lace and a matching cloak, fastened with a large brooch. Her ringlets are carefully arranged in elegant ringlets, a popular hairstyle of the time. As the daughter of the Spanish Infanta Isabella of Bourbon and the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand III, Marie-Therèse was a member of the powerful House of Habsburg. Her marriage to King Louis XIV of France in 1660 marked a significant political alliance between France and the Habsburg Empire. The portrait reflects the Catholic and Christian heritage of the time, with Marie-Therèse looking away from the viewer, a common convention in portraiture during the 17th century. The painting is now housed in the Musée Carnavalet in Paris, one of the city's most renowned museums, and is a testament to the rich artistic and historical heritage of France.
