The Common Gallinule (Gallinula galeata) is a medium-sized bird belonging to the Rallidae family of Gruiformes and has a grayish-brown body with white underparts, yellow legs and feet, and a red bill with yellow tip. Its wings are short and rounded, while its tail is short and pointed. They are be found in wetlands across North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. It feeds on aquatic plants such as pondweed or water lilies as well as small invertebrates such as insects or mollusks. During breeding season it builds floating nests among vegetation near the water's edge where it lays 4-10 eggs which hatch after 21 days of incubation by both parents. The young leave the nest within 24 hours of hatching but remain dependent on their parents for several weeks afterwards before becoming independent adults.
