Miniature Railway, Bognor, 1909

This railway of 10.25in gauge ran for one summer season. The builders of the Locomotive named " Winnie" were Robert Alexander Briggs and his son (seen driving) Robert Westrope Briggs. Mr Briggs senior was an eminent architect of theatres and retired to Shripney near Bognor in 1913, bringing with him Winnie which he operated on his private garden railway. In 1963 Mr Briggs presented Winnie to the Chichester Model Engineers and she still steamed on a regular basis.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1909, capturing a moment in time at the Miniature Railway in Bognor. The railway, with its narrow gauge of only 10.25 inches, operated for just one summer season, but left an indelible mark on those who experienced it. The focal point of this image is "Winnie" a locomotive lovingly crafted by Robert Alexander Briggs and his son Robert Westrope Briggs. Mr. Briggs senior was renowned as an architect of theaters before retiring to Shripney near Bognor in 1913. He brought Winnie along with him and created his own private garden railway where she continued to operate. Fast forward over five decades later to 1963 when Mr. Briggs generously presented Winnie to the Chichester Model Engineers. Remarkably, even after all those years, she still steamed on a regular basis, delighting both young and old alike. This photograph evokes feelings of Edwardian nostalgia as we witness children eagerly boarding the miniature train carriages while steam billows from Winnie's chimney. It serves as a reminder of simpler times when such simple pleasures brought immense joy. Preserved within the Photographic Collection at West Sussex Record Office under reference number PH 3278, this snapshot captures not just a moment in history but also the enduring spirit of adventure that railways have always inspired in people across generations.
