High Salvington Windmill, early 20th century

There has been a mill at High Salvington since the 1740s. This photograph shows the mill with the concrete roundhouse that replaced the wooden one in c1922. This served as a tearoom, but was replaced by a wooden structure in 1990 to restore the mill to its original appearance.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic High Salvington Windmill in all its glory during the early 20th century. Standing proudly against a picturesque backdrop, this historic mill has been an integral part of West Sussex's landscape since the 1740s. The photograph captures a significant moment in the windmill's history, as it features the concrete roundhouse that replaced the original wooden structure around 1922. This innovative addition served a dual purpose, functioning not only as a tearoom but also adding to the mill's charm and character. However, in 1990, a decision was made to restore High Salvington Windmill to its authentic appearance. As such, the concrete roundhouse was replaced by a carefully crafted wooden structure that faithfully recreated its original design. Preserved within West Sussex Record Office's Additional Manuscript Collection under reference number AM 507/1/51, this remarkable image offers us a glimpse into both architectural evolution and historical preservation efforts. High Salvington Windmill stands as an enduring symbol of West Sussex's rich heritage and serves as a testament to human ingenuity throughout centuries. Its timeless beauty continues to captivate visitors from near and far who appreciate its significance in shaping local history
