Abstract visualisation: the dark tunnel into Herculaneum

Herculaneum, Italy - 22 October 2014
Located in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town destroyed by a major volcanic eruption in 79 AD. In fact, it was completely buried. This image started off showing the dark and scary tunnel that leads to the now uncovered remains. But then I got adventurous and turned it into something more colorful and abstract, using a combination of Photoshop techniques including multi-layer blending, transformations and gradient mapping. I hope you like it

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Herculaneum, an ancient Roman town tragically destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Located in the shadow of this mighty volcano, Herculaneum was completely buried under layers of ash and debris. The image initially portrays a dark and ominous tunnel leading to the uncovered remains, evoking a sense of mystery and trepidation. However, the photographer's creativity took flight as they transformed this scene into a vibrant and abstract masterpiece using various Photoshop techniques. Through skillful manipulation including multi-layer blending, transformations, and gradient mapping, they infused vivid colors into the once foreboding tunnel. This artistic approach breathes new life into Herculaneum's tragic history while inviting viewers to explore its hidden wonders. The photo showcases radial symmetry with converging lines that draw our gaze towards a vanishing point at the bottom. As we descend down these steps through layered effects, it feels as though we are embarking on an adventure into another world. Jon Bower's imaginative interpretation not only pays homage to this ancient civilization but also highlights their expertise in color manipulation and image editing. This visually stunning composition serves as a testament to both Herculaneum's enduring legacy and Bower's artistic prowess.
