In a momentous event marking the end of an era, the second battalion of the esteemed Gloucestershire Regiment embarked on their journey to Bermuda and Jamaica. Led by Lt Col R J Bewell, these brave soldiers were not alone in their voyage; they were accompanied by their families, making them the first battalion since before the war to leave British shores with loved ones by their side. On this fateful Wednesday morning, 711 officers and men gathered at Southampton's port after arriving via special trains. The anticipation was palpable as they prepared to board the magnificent P&O liner Carthage. Yesterday, 35 families had already settled into their new temporary homes aboard the ship. Captured in a poignant photograph from January 22nd, 1947, we witness this historic departure unfold. Standing tall on Southampton's quay side are members of the Gloucestershire Regiment bidding farewell to familiar shores. With expressions ranging from determination to apprehension, these men embody both duty and sacrifice as they embark on a mission far away.
