EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the unique story of Bryckden Lane farm in Waldron, Sussex. Once a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II, it has now transformed into a thriving agricultural haven entirely run by German ex-POWs. The farm boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including a modern dairy for their T. T. tested herd. Under the ownership of Mrs J. V. Dawson, this picturesque Sussex farm stands as a testament to resilience and unity after the war. Despite initial skepticism, Mrs Dawson found her German staff to be incredibly dedicated and hardworking individuals who had either chosen to remain or return to this country they once fought against. The image showcases an intimate family mealtime scene with foreign workers gathered around a floral-adorned table enjoying tea together. It reflects not only the post-war era but also highlights the harmonious coexistence between different nationalities on British soil. Mrs Dawson emphasizes that there is no favoritism towards her German employees; rather, she was grateful for their presence when labor was scarce due to the remote location of the farm. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of how adversity can lead to unexpected alliances and friendships while showcasing an extraordinary chapter in British history where former enemies became valued members of society within just a few short years after conflict's end.
