This egg machine sells mushrooms. At 2 shillings a half pound sell like hot cakes
This egg machine sells mushrooms. At 2 shillings a half pound sell like " hot cakes" in this egg machine. The grower, Mr D. F. Stay of Littlewood Farm, Singleton, Sussex, installed the machine near his farm gate on the Midhurst-Chichester Road. Just a little conversion to normal egg vending machine, plus a canopy to keep it cool, " and you can fill it and forget it" says the former. It holds 60 half pound bags and has to be filled twice daily. Previously someone had to attend to direct sales - but this releases the attendant - who is free to get on with the supplying of the general markets.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo captures a unique sight from the past - an egg machine that sells mushrooms! Located near Littlewood Farm in Singleton, Sussex, this innovative vending machine has become quite the sensation. Priced at 2 shillings for a half pound, these mushroom bags are selling like "hot cakes" attracting locals and passersby alike. The brainchild behind this ingenious creation is Mr D. F. Stay, the proud grower of these delectable fungi. By modifying a traditional egg vending machine and adding a cooling canopy, he has made it incredibly convenient for customers to purchase his freshly harvested mushrooms. With its capacity to hold 60 half pound bags, Mr Stay only needs to refill it twice daily. Before the introduction of this remarkable invention, direct sales required constant attendance by someone on-site. However, with the mushroom vending machine taking care of transactions independently, the attendant is now free to focus on supplying general markets with other farm produce. The photograph taken by John Topham beautifully captures this piece of agricultural ingenuity from May 12th, 1961. It showcases how farmers like Mr D. F. Stay embraced innovation to streamline their business operations while providing delicious mushrooms directly to consumers. This image serves as a fascinating glimpse into the history of shops and trade in rural areas during that time period.
