EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a remarkable moment in history - the emergence of the first "frog-woman". During World War II, frogmen were known as fearless underwater swimmers who carried out daring operations. Now, at Butlins Holiday Camp in Filey, Yorkshire, these skilled individuals have trained Gwenda Davies to assist them in their demonstrations of this unique war work. Gwenda Davies, a 25-year-old ex-WaF and former insurance clerk from Fulham, stands proudly alongside her fellow frogmen. The team dons suits similar to those worn by German swimmers who attempted to blow up the bridge at Nijmegen in 1944. Equipped with flippers and breathing apparatuses, they showcase their expertise to an intrigued audience that includes holidaymakers and spectators. The image portrays unity among men and women as they push boundaries together. John Kassell from Richmond, Yorks; JGI Marriott from Manchester; A Capindale from Melton Mowbray; and "Chuck". Leyland from Manchester all stand beside Gwenda Davies as she breaks barriers within this male-dominated field. Taken on June 28th, 1946 by TopFoto. co. uk. , this photograph serves as a testament to human resilience during challenging times. It reminds us that even amidst conflict and adversity, individuals like Gwenda can rise above societal expectations and contribute significantly to their chosen profession.
