EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the unique solution devised by members of the Parachute Regiment, led by General Sir Richard Gale, to overcome the acute shortage of married quarters. In an effort to provide suitable housing for their families, these resourceful paratroopers have purchased luxury caravans on instalments from the Army. The village they have established has been aptly named Pegasus Village after the iconic winged horse emblem of the Airborne Forces. By year-end, this once barren site is expected to transform into a thriving community boasting 40 caravans equipped with modern amenities such as water and electricity. The village also features a club room, children's nursery, grocery shop with launderette facilities, and various other essential buildings repurposed from a disused wartime hospital. Already home to over 20 families, Pegasus Village has become a haven for contentment and happiness among its residents. Private John Williams (21) can be seen in this image playing joyfully with his one-year-old daughter Catherine while his wife Mary sits knitting in their caravan doorway. Mary proudly declares that there isn't a single unhappy wife within this idyllic settlement. Located near Aldershot in Hampshire, this innovative initiative allows paratroopers to secure their dream homes by paying £30 down payment followed by weekly instalments of £4 over two years. For these servicemen and their families who call it paradise on earth, Pegasus Village represents not only comfortable living but also camaraderie and resilience amidst challenging circumstances.
