For the first time (since pre-war days) a Kent strawberry field has been thrown open
For the first time (since pre-war days) a Kent strawberry field has been thrown open to the public to come and help themselves.
However, in the old days the fruit was free - but on K. Waltons Oak Tree Farm at Polhill, near Sevenoaks, the public were charged 1/1D per pound, plus the cost of the basket if required.
This is the first time it has been tried on his farm - and the response to an advertisement in the local paper was fantastic. The farmer was pleased with the result, since it means the plants are completely free of fruit for stronger growth. The variety - Talisman - and the crop has now been completely harvested.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a delightful scene that harks back to the pre-war days. For the first time in years, a Kent strawberry field has opened its doors to the public, allowing them to indulge in the sweet pleasure of picking their own strawberries. However, unlike in bygone times when these luscious fruits were free for all, K. Walton's Oak Tree Farm at Polhill near Sevenoaks decided to charge 1/1D per pound of strawberries and an additional fee for baskets if needed. The response from the community was nothing short of extraordinary after an advertisement appeared in the local paper. The farmer himself expressed his satisfaction with this novel venture as it not only depleted his plants of fruit but also ensured stronger growth for future crops. The variety on offer was Talisman, and now thanks to eager pickers like two-year-old Mandy Gorham from Sevenoaks - who can be seen happily helping herself while her parents diligently gather more berries - every last strawberry has been harvested. This heartwarming image captures both tradition and progress as families come together amidst nature's bounty. It serves as a reminder that even though times may change, there is still immense joy in connecting with our agricultural roots and relishing nature's gifts firsthand.
