Driver escapes in 100 miles an hour crash at British Empire trophy races. Wel Handley

Driver escapes in 100 miles an hour crash at British Empire trophy races.
Wel Handley had an amazing escape, from death, when driving Freddie Dixons Riley in the 250 mile British Empire Trophy Race at Donington Park, Derby. A few minutes after taking over from Dixon Handley overshot a corner when traveling at 100 miles per hour. The car left the road road, hit a low obstruction and leaping in the air overturned. It righted itself and then turned over and over, to finish up a smoking wreck. Handley was dragged from the driving seat practically unhurt. Wal Handley is renowned as a motor cyclist.
Photo shows, ambulance men rendering first aid to Handley, still in the driving seat of his car, immediately after his remarkable escapes.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness the heart-stopping moment when driver Wel Handley miraculously escapes a high-speed crash at the British Empire Trophy races. The intensity of the event is palpable as Handley, taking over from Freddie Dixon in his Riley car, loses control while hurtling down the track at an astonishing 100 miles per hour. In a split second, disaster strikes as the vehicle overshoots a corner and careens off-road, colliding with a low obstruction that sends it soaring into mid-air before violently overturning. As smoke billows from the wreckage, one cannot help but marvel at Handley's incredible luck. Against all odds, he emerges practically unscathed from his overturned car thanks to the swift actions of dedicated ambulance men who rush to render first aid. This extraordinary escape becomes even more remarkable considering Handley's reputation as a renowned motorcyclist. Captured on April 4th, 1936 by Planet News photographers for press coverage purposes during Europe's tumultuous interwar period, this monochrome image encapsulates both danger and resilience. It serves as a testament to human courage and reminds us of our vulnerability in pursuit of speed and victory on race tracks around the world.
