EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history as Paddington becomes the first London Borough to stage an air raid test. In this remarkable demonstration held at Paddington station, various emergency teams showcase their preparedness for potential attacks during wartime. The image showcases the dedication and bravery of road repair parties, decontamination squads, and first aid teams working tirelessly to handle the aftermath of a simulated bomb attack. Even Rover Scouts participate by portraying casualties, adding authenticity to the exercise. Witnessed by Home Office officials, six attacks were carried out throughout the test period. Despite the chaos caused by these bombings, it is awe-inspiring how efficiently and swiftly work was dealt with within just two hours. In this particular scene captured on Formosa Road in Paddington, we see rescuers carefully carrying down a gas casualty from a building hit by one of the bombs. The gravity of their mission is evident on their faces as they navigate through debris-filled streets. Dating back to 16th February 1938 between World Wars I and II, this monochrome photograph serves as a poignant reminder of Europe's tumultuous past. Preserved by TopFoto. co. uk under Planet News press photography collection number 73642, it stands as an invaluable historical artifact that sheds light on London's resilience during times of uncertainty and adversity.
