EDITORS COMMENTS
London's First Really Permanent Houses, 1st February 1946: A Glimpse into Post-War Progress". This print captures a significant moment in London's history - the unveiling of the city's first truly permanent houses on the Kidbrooke Estate. On Wednesday, 6th February 1946, these remarkable structures will be officially opened to mark a new era of hope and reconstruction. With construction commencing in August, these initial four houses are just a glimpse of the ambitious project underway. A total of 1,200 homes are being built across London, some even with assistance from German prisoners. This collaborative effort symbolizes unity and resilience after years of devastation caused by World War II. As we gaze upon this image, we can't help but appreciate the dedication and hard work that has gone into creating these dwellings for Londoners who have long awaited their own place to call home. The completion of another fifty houses within two months is testament to the determination to alleviate housing shortages faced by over 60,000 people currently on waiting lists. The bricks and sand used in constructing these homes represent more than just materials; they embody progress and renewal for a city emerging from darkness into light. Let us remember this historic milestone as an inspiration for future generations striving towards building better communities amidst challenging times.
