London: Squatters at the empty 60 room mansion a 144, Piccadilly, London, this morning
London: Squatters at the empty 60 room mansion a 144, Piccadilly, London, this morning. Ironically, adorning the wall of the building is a poster with the message, " London Policemen are Wonderful."
The squatters took over the building earlier this week, and by last night, it was reported that 350 persons had moved into the building, which is owned by the Amalgamated West End Developments and Property Trust Ltd.
Yesterday, an ultimatum was given to the squatters in the form of a high court order requiring them to leave the premises by 1600 hours tomorrow.
Dr John Moffat leader went to court with letter signed by 19 other occupants for more time to get evidence against the eviction.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a unique moment in London's history. In the heart of Piccadilly, an empty 60-room mansion stands proudly, now occupied by squatters who have made it their temporary home. The irony is not lost on anyone as a poster adorning the building's wall boldly declares, "London Policemen are Wonderful". The image tells a story of defiance and resistance against the backdrop of social inequality. Owned by the prestigious Amalgamated West End Developments and Property Trust Ltd. , this grand mansion has become a symbol of discontent among those seeking shelter and refuge. As news spread, more than 350 individuals flocked to claim their spot within these opulent walls. However, yesterday brought forth an ultimatum in the form of a high court order demanding that they vacate the premises by tomorrow afternoon. Dr. John Moffat emerged as their leader, armed with a letter signed by 19 other occupants pleading for additional time to gather evidence against eviction. Their fight for justice unfolds before our eyes through this powerful photograph. Taken on September 19th, 1969, this image serves as both documentation and testament to the resilience of those marginalized voices striving for recognition in one of London's most affluent neighborhoods - challenging societal norms while leaving an indelible mark on history.
