EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the 1930s when Imperial Airways pilots were preparing for the start of Atlantic survey flights. The decision had just been approved, and excitement filled the air as an experimental air mail service was also set to commence shortly after. The scene captures a group of dedicated pilots receiving flying boat instruction at a flying school in Hamble, Hampshire. Their training begins with hours of preliminary training on Cutty Sark light amphibian boats before progressing to multi-engine machines similar to those used on Empire routes. Imperial Airways generously provided the pupils with a Short Calcutta flying boat for their training purposes. In this particular moment frozen in time, we witness assistant instructor Flight Lieutenant M C Pascoe guiding and imparting his knowledge upon these aspiring aviators. This photograph not only serves as a historical documentation but also evokes a sense of adventure and ambition that characterized aviation during this era. It reminds us of the remarkable progress made in aviation technology and how it paved the way for future transatlantic journeys. As we admire this monochrome image from TopFoto. co. uk, we can't help but marvel at the courage and determination displayed by these pilots who were about to embark on groundbreaking missions that would shape the future of air travel forever.
