EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intriguing tale of Sir Philip Sassoon's Camlet Moat romance. After returning from Luxor, Egypt, Sir Philip embarked on a quest to unearth a legendary chest filled with gold and precious stones. Located just a mile away from his Trent Park residence in New Barnet, he chose the open space known as Camlet Moat for his excavation. However, local tradition held that this treasure was bound to the place by an enchantment that prevented anyone from carrying it away. In this image, we see the animal cemetery near the moat at Trent Park. The gravestones and graves create an eerie atmosphere, adding another layer of mystery to Sir Philip's adventurous pursuit. This monochrome photograph transports us back to 1924 when this extraordinary story unfolded. Central News captured this momentous event of early twentieth-century Europeana photography without any commercial intentions. Instead, they aimed to document history as it unfolded before their lens. As we gaze upon this image today, we are reminded of the allure of hidden treasures and the power of legends that continue to captivate our imaginations across time and space.
