EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken in 1966, Lt. Joseph J. (Jock) Smith of the 1st Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, proudly poses with Pte. Terence Patrick Sullivan, a soldier under his command. The image captures a moment of camaraderie and gratitude, as Lt. Smith holds the Military Cross he was awarded for bravery, with Pte. Sullivan by his side. The scene unfolds in the aftermath of an incident that took place in Aden, a former British colony in the Arabian Peninsula. Lt. Smith had shown exceptional courage and quick thinking during a violent encounter with rebels, risking his own life to save Pte. Sullivan, who had been gravely wounded. Lt. Smith's Military Cross citation reads, "For gallant and distinguished services in the field. During an attack on the enemy, he showed great courage and leadership, and when a grenade landed amongst his men, he unhesitatingly threw himself on it, smothering it with his body, thus saving the lives of several of his men." The photograph, taken by renowned Scottish photographer George Little, is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the British military during the turbulent period of decolonization. It encapsulates the spirit of bravery, comradeship, and selflessness that defined the lives of soldiers like Lt. Smith and Pte. Sullivan. As we reflect on this historic image, we are reminded of the importance of honoring the past and recognizing the valor and dedication of those who have served their countries in times of conflict. This photograph, a treasure from The Northcliffe Collection, stands as a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the enduring bond between soldiers in the face of adversity.
