EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by renowned British photographer Ernest Jones, captures a historic moment in the annals of the Royal Navy as HMS Theseus sets sail from Portsmouth Harbour in 1956. The HMS Theseus, an aircraft carrier of the Majestic-class, is laden with troops and vehicles, ready to embark on a mission to Egypt as part of the Suez Crisis. The image exudes a sense of urgency and determination as the massive vessel cuts through the waves, with the white foam of the sea spraying up in its wake. The soldiers and sailors on board, dressed in their uniforms and helmets, stand at attention on the deck, their expressions a mix of anticipation and resolve. The HMS Theseus was one of several British and French ships that were dispatched to the Suez Canal in response to the nationalization of the canal by Egypt's President Gamal Abdel Nasser. The crisis, which lasted from July to November 1956, resulted in a military intervention by the United Kingdom, France, and Israel, and ultimately led to the resignation of Prime Minister Anthony Eden and the end of the British Empire's dominance in the Middle East. This photograph, taken from The Northcliffe Collection of the Mail Newspapers Archive, is a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in history, when the might of the Royal Navy was called upon to defend British interests abroad. It is a testament to the courage and dedication of the men and women who served on board the HMS Theseus and other vessels during this time, and a reminder of the sacrifices they made for their country.
