Tenoumer Crater in Mauritania
January 24, 2008 - Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on the Terra satellite captured this image of Tenoumer Crater in Mauritania, which lies deep in the Sahara Desert. Nearly a perfect circle, it is 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) wide, and sports a rim 100 meters (330 feet) high. In this simulated-true-color image, the arid landscape appears in varying shades of brick red, brown, and tan. The crateras outline is unmistakable, yet it doesnat necessarily look like a crater; the light and shadows make it look more as if someone pressed a giant cookie cutter into the rock. In this image, the sunlight shines from the southeast (lower right), and the bright arc along the northwestern part of the crater is where the crater walls slope up to the rim. Around the perimeter, the relatively steep walls cast dark shadows. Although it resides in ancient rock, Tenoumer is geologically young, ranging in age between roughly 10, 000 and 30, 000 years old

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring beauty of Tenoumer Crater in Mauritania, a hidden gem nestled deep within the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert. Captured by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on the Terra satellite on January 24,2008, this image unveils a mesmerizing sight that is both intriguing and mysterious. The perfectly circular shape of Tenoumer Crater immediately catches one's attention. Measuring approximately 1.9 kilometers wide with an impressive rim towering at 100 meters high, it stands as a testament to nature's remarkable power and precision. The arid landscape surrounding the crater reveals itself in varying shades of brick red, brown, and tan, creating a striking contrast against the clear blue sky above. Despite its unmistakable outline as a crater, Tenoumer surprises viewers with its cookie-cutter-like appearance when observed from this angle. The interplay between light and shadows adds depth to this otherworldly scene; it almost feels like someone pressed a colossal cookie cutter into solid rock. In this simulated-true-color image, sunlight bathes the landscape from the southeast (lower right), casting bright arcs along the northwestern part where walls slope up to reach their imposing rim. Alongside these slopes lie dark shadows created by relatively steep walls encircling Tenoumer. While residing amidst ancient rock formations, Tenoumer itself is geologically young compared to its surroundings – estimated to be between 10,000 and 30,000 years old. This photograph encapsulates not only its geological significance but also serves as a reminder of our planet's enduring natural wonders that continue to captivate us through their timeless beauty.
