The South Pole of Saturns moon Tethys

September 24, 2005 - The south pole of Saturns moon Tethys. The giant rift Ithaca Chasma cuts across the disk. Much of the topography seen here, including that of Ithaca Chasma, has a soft, muted appearance. It is clearly very old and has been heavily bombarded by impacts over time.
Many of the fresh-appearing craters (ones with crisp relief) exhibit unusually bright crater floors. The origin of the apparent brightness (or albedo) contrast is not known. It is possible that impacts punched through to a brighter layer underneath, or perhaps it is brighter because of different grain sizes or textures of the crater floor material in comparison to material along the crater walls and surrounding surface.
The mosaic is composed of nine images taken during Cassinis close flyby of Tethys (1, 071 kilometers, or 665 miles across) on September 24, 2005, during which the spacecraft passed approximately 1, 500 kilometers (930 miles) above the moons surface. This view is centered on terrain at approximately 1.2 degrees south latitude and 342 degrees west longitude on Tethys. It has been rotated so that north is up

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the mesmerizing beauty of the South Pole of Saturn's moon Tethys. The image showcases the prominent feature known as Ithaca Chasma, a massive rift that stretches across the moon's disk. The topography in this region appears soft and muted, indicating its ancient age and extensive bombardment by impacts over time. What makes this photograph even more intriguing are the fresh-appearing craters with unusually bright floors. Scientists remain puzzled about the origin of this brightness contrast (or albedo). It is speculated that these impacts may have penetrated through to a brighter layer beneath or that different grain sizes or textures on the crater floor contribute to their luminosity compared to surrounding surfaces. Composed of nine images taken during Cassini's close flyby on September 24,2005, this mosaic offers a comprehensive view of Tethys from approximately 1.2 degrees south latitude and 342 degrees west longitude. With north rotated upwards for better orientation, it provides an awe-inspiring glimpse into one of Saturn's enigmatic moons. This print is brought to you by Stocktrek Images, showcasing their expertise in capturing celestial wonders like no other.
