A smoke pall dominates this view of tropical southern Africa

July 23, 2011 - A smoke pall dominates this view of tropical southern Africa, one of the most fire-prone regions of the world. Oblique, northwest-looking view showing the extent of smoke on the African plateau, from central Zimbabwe (lower left) to northern Malawi (top right), and in the wide coastal plains of the lower Zambezi River valley of Mozambique (lower right). Here smoke can be seen blowing inland, channeled up the Zambezi River valley and contributing to the pall on the plateau. The light gray smoke plumes contrast with higher altitude, brighter patchy cloud cover at image lower right. The smoke palls obscure the details on the land surface so that Lake Malawi, one of Africs Great Lakes, is barely visible. The same goes for Lake Cahora Bassa, Africs fourth largest reservoir, in the Zambezi valley. Solar panels extending from Russian spacecraft docked at the International Space Station are visible at image left

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dominance of a smoke pall over tropical southern Africa, showcasing one of the world's most fire-prone regions. The oblique, northwest-looking view reveals the vast extent of smoke covering the African plateau, stretching from central Zimbabwe to northern Malawi and encompassing the wide coastal plains of Mozambique's lower Zambezi River valley. As seen in this image, smoke is carried inland by winds channeled up the Zambezi River valley, contributing to the dense pall on the plateau. The light gray plumes of smoke create a stark contrast against patches of brighter cloud cover at lower right. Such heavy smokescreens obscure details on land surfaces to such an extent that even Lake Malawi, one of Africa's Great Lakes, appears barely visible. Similarly affected is Lake Cahora Bassa – Africa's fourth-largest reservoir – located in Mozambique's Zambezi valley. Amidst this scene unfolds another intriguing sight: solar panels extending from Russian spacecraft docked at the International Space Station are visible towards image left. This remarkable juxtaposition serves as a reminder not only of Earth's natural phenomena but also highlights human presence and technological advancements beyond our planet. Through this stunning visual composition captured by Stocktrek Images, we gain insight into both nature's power and humanity's impact on our blue planet.
