Satellite view of Mount Fogo

June 10, 2009 - Satellite view of Mount Fogo, a volcanic island in the Republic of Cape Verde of the westernmost tip of Africa. The volcanoas most distinctive feature, its nine-kilometer wide caldera, Cha Caldera, is shown in this image. The crater wall in the west towers one kilometer above the crater floor. The eastern half of the crater wall is gone, erased in a massive collapse deep in its ancient history. In the center of the crater, a steep cone named Pico rises about 100 meters above the crater rim (more than a kilometer from the crater floor). The young peak reaches 2, 829 meters (9, 281 feet) above sea level, making it the islands highest point.
Dark trails of hardened lava from the volanoas most recent eruptions stream out of the crater east into the Atlantic Ocean. The volcano last erupted in 1995. The sepia stream of lava from that eruption is pooled near the crater rim west of Pico.
Remarkably, the crater is inhabited. A straight road cuts between the crater wall and Pico, ending near the vent that erupted in 1995. Bright white dots on the north side of the crater are villages. Residents of the Cha Caldera evacuated during the eruption

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a satellite view of Mount Fogo, an awe-inspiring volcanic island located in the Republic of Cape Verde, at the westernmost tip of Africa. The image beautifully captures the most distinctive feature of this volcano - its expansive nine-kilometer wide caldera known as Cha Caldera. Standing tall on the western side, the crater wall towers an impressive one kilometer above the crater floor. However, history has left its mark on this ancient wonder as half of the eastern crater wall has been erased due to a massive collapse. At the heart of this colossal crater lies Pico, a steep cone that rises approximately 100 meters above the rim and stands over a kilometer away from the crater floor. This youthful peak reaches an astounding height of 2,829 meters (9,281 feet) above sea level, making it undoubtedly Mount Fogo's highest point. The photograph also reveals dark trails formed by hardened lava flowing from previous eruptions which extend eastwards into the vast Atlantic Ocean. The most recent eruption occurred in 1995 and remnants of sepia-colored lava can still be seen pooled near Pico's western flank. What makes this scene even more remarkable is that despite its volatile nature, life persists within this formidable landscape. A straight road cuts through between Pico and the towering crater wall leading towards a vent that erupted during 1995's fiery event. Bright white dots scattered along the north side represent villages where residents once inhabited Cha Caldera but were forced to evacuate during times of eruption. This stunning visual masterpiece allows us to marvel at both nature's destructive power and its ability to sustain life amidst adversity.
