EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to a receding glacial scene approximately 18,000 years ago. As we gaze upon this broad view of what is now modern north Poland or western Ukraine, we witness the dramatic transformation of the landscape during the prehistoric era. The melting ice gives birth to lakes, rivers, and inlets that flow into the vast Baltic Sea. In this digitally generated image, nature unfolds before our eyes with an abundance of wildlife thriving in their natural habitat. A large group of animals roams freely across Eurasia's paleogeography as they graze on the frozen permafrost. Among them are magnificent creatures such as teratorns soaring through the sky and woolly mammoths trudging along with their massive frames. The winter chill hangs heavy in the air as these ancient beings navigate through a perilous polar climate. We catch glimpses of a majestic bird of prey – a vulture – surveying its surroundings from above while other species like rhinoceros and various herbivores seek sustenance amidst this cold wilderness. Arthur Dorety skillfully captures both the grandeur and danger inherent in this snapshot from history. Through his vivid illustration, he transports us to a time when megafauna ruled over an icy world shaped by glaciers and mountains. This artwork serves as a reminder of Earth's ever-changing past and offers us an opportunity to reflect on our planet's rich geological heritage and diverse array of life forms that have come before us.
