EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the grandeur of Swindon Shed in 1930, home to seven majestic King Class locomotives. From left to right, No 6005 King George II, No 6008 King James II, No 6017 King Edward IV, No 6020 King Henry IV, No 6022 King Edward III, No 6023 King Edward II, and No 6024 King Edward I, are all proudly displayed in their pristine condition. The King Class locomotives, also known as the 4-6-0s, were the largest and most powerful express passenger locomotives in the Great Western Railway (GWR) fleet. Built between 1925 and 1930, these locomotives were designed to haul the heaviest express trains on the GWR network, including the famous Cornish Riviera Express. Swindon Shed, located in Swindon, Wiltshire, was the largest locomotive works in the world at the time and was responsible for the maintenance and repair of over 1,000 locomotives. The shed was a hive of activity, with locomotives being serviced, repaired, and prepared for their next journeys. The photograph provides a glimpse into the past, showcasing the impressive size and power of the King Class locomotives, as well as the meticulous care taken in their maintenance. The shed's high arched roofs and rows of locomotives create a sense of grandeur and importance, reflecting the vital role these engines played in the railway network of the time. This photograph is a testament to the engineering prowess of the GWR and the importance of Swindon Shed in maintaining its fleet. It is a reminder of a bygone era, when steam locomotives ruled the rails and the sight of these magnificent machines was a common one on the railway network.
