EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the magnificent signal gantry at Newton Abbot Station in Devon, dating back to approximately 1920. Originally known as Newton when it opened its doors in December 1846 under the management of the South Devon Railway Company, the station underwent significant developments over the years. By 1877, it was renamed Newton Abbot and boasted an impressive array of facilities including a large goods shed, train sheds, and bustling workshops that played a crucial role in converting stock and lines to standard gauge. Between the two world wars, Newton Abbot station experienced further expansion and reconstruction. In April 1927, it proudly unveiled its newly designed station building by Culverhouse.
