Railway carriage converted to an ambulance ward car, c1939

This internal view of an ambulance ward car gives a clear image of both the ingenuity used in converting rolling stock for medical use, but also the cramped conditions endured within these vehicles. Each ward car was fitted with a tier of three beds along each side. The beds could be arranged for either lying down or could be folded against the wall when not in use. Note the straps around the underside of the beds and coming down the side of the ceiling that held the beds securely in place. This appears to be a staged publicity shot judging by the smiles of the casualties who are all keen to ensure that they are captured in the shot

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the STEAM Museum of the GWR captures a remarkable transformation during World War II. In this internal view, we witness the ingenious conversion of a railway carriage into an ambulance ward car, showcasing both resourcefulness and the challenging conditions endured within these vehicles. The photograph reveals a cramped yet functional space where each side is equipped with a tier of three beds. These beds could be arranged for patients to either lie down or folded against the wall when not in use. To ensure safety during transportation, straps are seen securing the underside of the beds while others descend from the ceiling's sides, firmly holding them in place. While it may seem like just another staged publicity shot at first glance, one cannot help but notice something extraordinary about it. The smiles on the faces of these casualties convey their eagerness to be captured in this momentous image. It speaks volumes about their resilience and determination amidst adversity. This snapshot serves as a testament to Swindon Works' exceptional craftsmanship and dedication to repurpose rolling stock for medical purposes during wartime. Beyond its historical significance, it reminds us of human ingenuity and compassion that can thrive even under challenging circumstances.
