EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the mid-19th century, specifically around 1860, when the Early Medical Fund Society Committee Members of the Great Western Railway (GWR) were captured in a moment frozen in time. The esteemed individuals who formed this committee are presented from top to bottom and left to right as follows: R Cook, W Nicholson, J Armstrong, W Laverick, W Ellis, P H Mason, C Trimmer, and W J Brown. These dedicated men played an instrumental role in shaping the GWR Medical Fund Society during its early years. As pioneers of healthcare provision within the railway industry at that time, they worked tirelessly to ensure that medical assistance was readily available for all employees of the GWR. The photograph exudes a sense of pride and determination as each committee member poses with utmost seriousness. Their stern expressions reflect their commitment towards providing essential medical care for railway workers who faced numerous challenges on a daily basis. Preserved by STEAM Museum of the GWR (not affiliated with the company), this historical artifact serves as a reminder of how far we have come in terms of healthcare accessibility and worker's rights. It pays homage to these unsung heroes whose efforts laid down strong foundations for future advancements in employee welfare across various industries. As we gaze upon this image today, let us acknowledge their invaluable contributions while also appreciating our present-day privileges stemming from their dedication over 150 years ago.
