Easter cactus stigma, SEM

Easter cactus stigma. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the stigma (pink) and style (green) of an Easter cactus flower (Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri). This is the top part of the female reproductive structure (carpel) of the flower. Pollen grains containing the male sex cells land on the stigma and may move down the style into the ovary (not seen). If the male cells fertilise the female sex cells (ovules) in the ovary, then the carpel may ripen to form a fruit that contains the plants seeds. Magnification: x60 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of an Easter cactus stigma. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are presented with a close-up view of the top part of the female reproductive structure, known as the carpel, of a Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri flower. The delicate pink stigma stands out against the vibrant green style, creating a visually striking contrast. The role of this fascinating stigma is crucial in the process of plant reproduction. As pollen grains containing male sex cells land on its surface, they may travel down the style and into the ovary, which unfortunately remains unseen in this image. Should these male cells successfully fertilize the female sex cells or ovules within the ovary, then there is potential for fruit formation that will house and protect future generations through seeds. With a magnification level of x60 at 6x7cm size, every tiny detail becomes apparent to our eyes. This SEM photograph not only highlights nature's incredible structures but also emphasizes their importance in sustaining life cycles. It serves as a reminder that even within seemingly small components lies immense complexity and purpose. Science Photo Library has once again captured an awe-inspiring moment from nature's repertoire—showcasing both its artistic beauty and scientific significance without mentioning any commercial use associated with it.
