Sir Henry Fitzhardinge Berkeley Maxse (1832-1883): A Distinguished Military Career and Governorship in Newfoundland and Heligoland This photograph captures Sir Henry Fitzhardinge Berkeley Maxse, a British military officer and colonial administrator, in later life. Maxse was born on July 18, 1832, and began his military career in the Royal Horse Guards, serving in the Crimean War (1853-1856). He gained fame for his participation in the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Battle of Balaclava on October 25, 1854. This daring cavalry charge, immortalized in Tennyson's poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade," resulted in heavy losses but ultimately proved a turning point in the war. Maxse's military accomplishments did not go unnoticed, and he was appointed Governor of Heligoland in 1868. Heligoland, a small island in the North Sea, was a strategic British possession. Maxse served there until 1872, when he was appointed Governor of Newfoundland. As Governor of Newfoundland (1872-1883), Maxse faced numerous challenges, including economic instability, fisheries disputes with the United States, and tensions with the indigenous Beothuk people. Despite these challenges, he worked to improve infrastructure, promote economic development, and maintain peace in the colony. Maxse's tenure as Governor of Newfoundland ended tragically when he died by suicide on March 25, 1883, at the age of 50. The cause of his death remains a mystery, but it is believed that he may have been suffering from depression or other personal struggles.
