SEM of diamond stylus in groove of LP record H100 / 0109
Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a long-playing record (L.P.), showing a spherical diamond stylus sitting in one of the concentric grooves. The L.P. is made by pressing the recording information onto a softened (heated) PVC disc. The stylus sits nicely in the V-shaped groove, and lateral vibrations are picked up by the stylus as the record rotates: these are transduced by a moving-coil or moving- magnet cartridge into an electrical signal, which passes through an amplifier to be heard on loudspeakers. Magnification: X 250 at 35mm size, X 1760 at 8x10-inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Science Photo Library showcases a fascinating close-up of an everyday object that we often take for granted: the long-playing record (L. P. ). Through this scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are able to marvel at the intricate details of its surface. In this image, a spherical diamond stylus is elegantly nestled within one of the concentric grooves on the L. P. The record itself is crafted by pressing recording information onto a heated PVC disc, resulting in a medium capable of preserving and reproducing sound. As the L. P. rotates, lateral vibrations are effortlessly detected by the stylus, which acts as a transducer. These vibrations are then converted into electrical signals through either a moving-coil or moving-magnet cartridge. This signal passes through an amplifier before being projected through loudspeakers, allowing us to immerse ourselves in our favorite tunes. The magnification used for this SEM is truly remarkable - X 250 at 35mm size and an astounding X 1760 at 8x10-inch size - enabling us to appreciate every minute detail present on this familiar object. Dr. Tony Brain's expertise has brought forth yet another awe-inspiring glimpse into our technological world with his skillful capture of this diamond stylus in action on an LP record surface.
