Yellow fever virus particles, TEM
Yellow fever virus particles. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of yellow fever virus particles (white) growing in culture. Yellow fever belongs to the flavivirus group and contains RNA (ribonucleic acid) genetic material. It is endemic in tropical Africa and Central and South America, and is transmitted to humans by infected female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes when they bite. It causes yellowing of the skin (jaundice), as well as fever, headache and nausea. In serious cases there may be liver and kidney damage, or even death. Vaccination can provide immunity. Magnification: x80, 000 at 5x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of yellow fever virus particles under a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Colored in white against a black background, these minuscule viral entities are seen thriving in culture. Belonging to the flavivirus group, yellow fever is an RNA-based pathogen that primarily affects tropical regions of Africa and Central and South America. The transmission of this infectious disease occurs through female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes when they bite humans. The consequences can be severe, with symptoms ranging from jaundice (yellowing of the skin) to fever, headache, and nausea. In more critical cases, yellow fever can lead to liver and kidney damage or even death. However, there is hope for prevention through vaccination as it provides immunity against this dangerous virus. With a magnification level of x80,000 at 5x7cm size, this image offers us an up-close look at these mosquito-borne pathogens responsible for causing such devastation. Science Photo Library has once again captured the essence of scientific exploration by presenting us with this visually stunning representation of microorganisms that pose significant threats to human health. Let this photograph serve as a reminder of our ongoing battle against infectious diseases and the importance of continued research towards their eradication.
