EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Xerox Alto computer, a groundbreaking invention that revolutionized the world of technology. Developed by Xerox in 1972 as a research computer, these machines were not only cutting-edge but also carried an astonishing price tag of $32,000 each. The Xerox Alto was truly ahead of its time, boasting several remarkable features that are now considered commonplace. One notable aspect is its monitor, ingeniously designed to display an entire page of text – a true game-changer for productivity. Moreover, this extraordinary machine was the first to introduce a graphical user interface (GUI), paving the way for intuitive interactions with computers. Positioned on the lower right corner is another innovation: a mouse - an input device that has become inseparable from modern computing. Equally impressive was its ability to connect over a network using ethernet technology – something we take for granted today but was unheard of at the time. This photograph captures just one artifact among over 3,000 others housed within the Computer History Museum in California's Silicon Valley. Established in 1996 and dedicated to preserving and restoring historically significant computers, this museum serves as both an educational resource and homage to technological advancements throughout history. In 2005, it relocated to become part of NASA Research Park in Mountain View, California. This image encapsulates not only a piece of hardware but also represents decades worth of scientific progress and human ingenuity that continues shaping our digital landscape today.
