X-ray of light bulb

Light bulb. X-ray of an electric light bulb. Bulbs produce light from a filament (horizontal structure, upper centre). This is a finely coiled wire of tungsten which heats up and glows as an electric current is passed through it. The contacts through which the electricity is supplied are seen on the base (bottom centre) as white oval shapes. Tungsten is used in the filament as it is strong and has a high melting point (3410 degrees Celsius). The glass bulb contains inert gases, usually nitrogen and argon, to prevent corrosion of the filament by oxygen. Over its lifetime, the tungsten filament slowly evaporates away until eventually it breaks

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an X-ray image of a light bulb, revealing the intricate inner workings that bring illumination to our lives. At the heart of this technological marvel lies a finely coiled wire made of tungsten, seen as a horizontal structure in the upper center. This filament serves as the key element responsible for generating light when an electric current passes through it. The base of the bulb, depicted as white oval shapes at the bottom center, houses contacts that supply electricity to power up this ingenious creation. Tungsten was chosen for its remarkable strength and exceptionally high melting point, reaching an astonishing 3410 degrees Celsius. Encased within the glass bulb are inert gases like nitrogen and argon, strategically placed to prevent corrosion of the filament by oxygen. As time goes by, we witness how this resilient tungsten filament gradually evaporates until it eventually reaches its breaking point. Through radiography techniques employed in capturing this image, Science Photo Library offers us a glimpse into both the beauty and complexity behind everyday electrical equipment. It is a testament to human ingenuity and scientific progress that has revolutionized our world with energy-efficient lighting solutions. Let this mesmerizing visual serve as a reminder of how technology continues to shape our lives while igniting curiosity about what lies beneath even seemingly ordinary objects like light bulbs.
