Worcesters engine

Worcesters engine. Historical artwork of the second Marquis of Worcesters engine. The design was granted a patent in 1663. Worcester called it his water commanding engine, as its function was to raise water. This is often credited with being the first steam engine, however some believe that it was actually operated by a manual pump. It might have been used for supplying water to canals, or for draining water from mines or marshes. A model of the engine was demonstrated at Vauxhall, London from 1663 until 1667, the year of Worcesters death. Published in History and progress of the steam engine, England, 1830

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historical artwork of Worcesters engine, a groundbreaking invention that has left an indelible mark on the world of engineering. Patented in 1663 by the second Marquis of Worcester, this design is often hailed as the first steam engine, although there are differing opinions regarding its actual mode of operation. Known as the water commanding engine, Worcester's creation had a vital purpose: to raise water. Its application could have been diverse, ranging from supplying water to canals or draining mines and marshes. A model of this remarkable engine was proudly exhibited at Vauxhall in London for four years until 1667 when Worcestershire passed away. Published in "History and Progress of the Steam Engine" in England during 1830, this monochrome illustration offers us a glimpse into seventeenth-century industrial technology. The intricate sketch captures both the complexity and ingenuity behind this early British innovation. The significance of Worcester's engine cannot be overstated; it represents a pivotal moment in history where science and industry converged to shape our modern world. This image serves as a reminder of how far we've come since those early days while paying homage to one man's contribution to progress.
