EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of William Hogarth, a renowned British artist whose influence on western sequential art is immeasurable. The 19th-century artwork showcases Hogarth's remarkable talent as a satirist and social critic. From realistic portraiture to his iconic comic strip-like series called modern moral subjects, Hogarth's diverse range of work showcased his artistic prowess. The image portrays an adult male, presumably William Hogarth himself, against a simple white background. His piercing gaze reflects the depth of his creativity and intellect. With every stroke of his brush or pen, he challenged societal norms and shed light on political issues prevalent during his time. Hogarth's impact was so profound that even today, satirical political illustrations in a similar style are often referred to as "Hogarthian". This testament to his enduring legacy speaks volumes about the significance of his contributions to the world of art. Published in Old England by Charles Knight in 1860, this historical illustration transports us back to an era where artists like Hogarth were revered for their ability to capture human nature through their craft. As we admire this monochrome masterpiece captured by Todd-White Art Photography from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of the power that art holds in shaping our understanding of history and society itself.
