William Harvey, English doctor
William Harvey (1578-1657), English doctor. Harvey is considered the founder of modern physiology for his work on the circulation of the blood. He used dissection and experimentation to demonstrate that blood is circulated around the body by the pumping action of the heart. This contradicted the beliefs of the previous 1300 years, that blood oscillates back and forth in the blood vessels. He published these views in a celebrated treatise of 1628. He also conducted notable embryological research, proposing that all life forms originate from an egg. He was royal physician to King James I from 1618 and Charles I from 1640

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed William Harvey, an English doctor who revolutionized the field of physiology. Born in 1578 and passing away in 1657, Harvey is widely regarded as the founder of modern physiology due to his groundbreaking work on blood circulation. Through meticulous dissection and experimentation, he defied centuries-old beliefs by proving that blood circulates throughout the body via the pumping action of the heart. His revolutionary findings were published in a renowned treatise in 1628. Beyond his contributions to understanding blood flow, Harvey also conducted significant research in embryology. He proposed that all life forms originate from eggs, further expanding our knowledge of how organisms develop and evolve. Not only was Harvey a brilliant scientist and researcher, but he also held prestigious positions as royal physician to both King James I starting from 1618 and later Charles I from 1640. This portrait captures his intellectual prowess and dedication to advancing human understanding. Displayed with vibrant colors and intricate details, this historical illustration pays homage to one of Britain's most influential figures in medical history. It serves as a reminder of Harvey's immense impact on human physiology and his lasting legacy within scientific circles worldwide.
