EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable William Arrol, a Scottish civil engineer whose contributions to bridge building and engineering are nothing short of extraordinary. Born in 1839, Arrol's journey began at a young age when he worked in a thread factory before finding his true passion for blacksmithing. As fate would have it, he later became a foreman at a boiler and bridge-making company, honing his skills and expertise. At the age of 29, Arrol took the leap and established his own business as a boiler maker. His dedication and talent propelled him forward, leading to the construction of an expansive works facility for iron bridges by 1872. It was during this time that he designed two iconic structures - the second Tay Bridge and Forth Rail Bridge - both located in Scotland. Arrol's brilliance extended beyond Scottish borders as well. He left an indelible mark on London with his design of Tower Bridge, one of its most recognizable landmarks even today. Not content with confining himself to Europe alone, Arrol also lent his engineering prowess to Cairo by constructing the impressive Nile Bridge. Knighted for his exceptional achievements in engineering, Sir William Arrol stands tall among history's greatest minds in transportation technology. This monochrome artwork from La Science Illustree beautifully captures him in all his glory – head held high with determination etched upon his face. A testament to human ingenuity and innovation during the late 19th century, this portrait immortalizes an individual who shaped our world through groundbreaking infrastructure projects that continue to inspire awe today.
